The Alphonsa Byrd Leadership Foundation (ABLF) was founded by Alphonsa Byrd Jr. to honor the extraordinary legacy of his father, Alphonsa Byrd Sr.
Alphonsa Byrd Sr. was a respected educator, community leader, and public servant who dedicated his life to uplifting others through education and civic leadership. He made history as the first African American City Councilman in Troy, Alabama, breaking barriers while advocating for progress and opportunity in his community.
His life reflected a deep commitment to education, leadership, and service — values that continue to guide the mission of ABLF today.
Inspired by this legacy, the foundation was established to create opportunities that empower young people to learn, lead, and succeed.
To inspire and empower students through leadership, education, and STEAM opportunities that build a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable future.
We envision a future where students from all backgrounds have access to the tools, mentorship, and educational opportunities needed to become leaders, innovators, and changemakers.
By investing in youth today, we are helping shape a brighter tomorrow.
The Alphonsa Byrd Leadership Academy was launched to provide hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for future careers in STEAM fields. This innovative program exposes students to emerging technology and potential careers in the growing drone and aviation industries. ABLA is also developing a curriculum for middle and high school students that will support workforce development and career readiness. Students as young as 16 years old can earn an FAA Drone UAV License, allowing them to fly drones commercially and begin earning income in the expanding drone industry.
Education changes lives.
The ABLF Scholarship Program supports students who demonstrate leadership potential, academic dedication, and a desire to pursue careers in STEAM fields. Scholarship funds help remove financial barriers and allow students to continue their educational journeys while preparing to become future innovators and leaders in their communities. More information about scholarship opportunities will be announced as the program expands.
