About Us

Our Story

The Alphonsa Byrd Leadership Foundation (ABLF) was founded by Alphonsa Byrd Jr. to honor the extraordinary legacy of his father, Alphonsa Byrd Sr.

Alphonsa Byrd Sr. was a respected educator, community leader, and public servant who dedicated his life to uplifting others through education and civic leadership. He made history as the first African American City Councilman in Troy, Alabama, breaking barriers while advocating for progress and opportunity in his community.

His life reflected a deep commitment to education, leadership, and service — values that continue to guide the mission of ABLF today.

Inspired by this legacy, the foundation was established to create opportunities that empower young people to learn, lead, and succeed.

First African American City Councilman in Troy, Alabama
In 1985, Mr. Alphonsa Bryd Sr. became the first black man to be elected to the city government office in Troy’s history.
Re-elected in 1988 and in 1992, Mr. Byrd continued as District Five’s representative until he retired in 1996. His quiet demeanor hid the powerful political base he had developed. This influence came through in planning sessions before council meetings. He was never denied any initiative he proposed for his consituents.
